In this second edition, the author has rewritten many sections of the first edition and added new material to keep the contents in line with current concepts. With the first edition, his purpose was to present the fundamentals of physiology for students of the medical sciences and, in so doing, to attain brevity by omitting or reducing to synopses material such as anatomical and biochemical topics and systematic coverage of clinical physiology, all of which are commonly covered in larger texts.
