Despite their anatomical contiguity, the thyroid and parathyroid glands are rarely both spontaneously affected by disease at the same time. At least 16 cases of coexisting hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism (1-13), one case of hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism (14), and 2 cases of hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism associated with hypoadrenocorticism (15, 16) have been described. This is the first time to our knowledge, however, that a case of associated hyperthyroidism and idiopathic hypoparathyroidism has been reported.
A 22-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to the University of California Medical Center on February 19, 1961, because of stiffness and tingling of the hands
