In this book are the papers and associated discussion presented during a symposium held at Rio de Janeiro in August of 1960. The meeting was organized by a group of electrophysiologists, who invited several other electrophysiologists, some anatomists, and a pharmacologist. In the first paper the suitability of the title of the symposium is questioned by an anatomist, who substitutes for "specialized tissues of the heart" her own term, "atrio-ventricular connecting system (ACVS)." All this refers to what is conventionally designated in English as the conducting system, and more accurately by the Germans as das Reizleitungssystem.
