The term "biliary cirrhosis" has traditionally been applied not only to the hepatic lesion that follows long-standing obstruction of the extrahepatic bile ducts ("secondary biliary cirrhosis"), but also to an assortment of poorly understood intrinsic liver diseases that are characterized by chronic intrahepatic cholestasis and ultimate hepatic fibrosis ("primary biliary cirrhosis").
