The forty-second volume in a series of monographs on the practice of medicine is intended as a rapid guide to the diagnosis and the treatment of those disorders of metabolism that occur in the form of a "crisis." The authors include under this heading not only the customarily accepted emergencies associated with disturbances of carbohydrate metabolism, uremic or hepatic coma, and disorders of pituitary, thyroid, and adrenocortical function, but also myasthenia gravis, periodic paralysis, gout, and the porphyrias. This results in arbitrary considerations. Some degree of overlap and repetition, therefore, could not be avoided, as the authors themselves have realized.
