Fine structural techniques permit recognition of the abnormal reaction of living cells and development of a tentative organelle pathology. Conventional liver cell injury, as in viral or alcoholic hepatitis, is associated with alterations of the organelles responsible for specific synthetic or detoxifying functions of the liver cell, the endoplasmic reticulum, and for energy provision, the mitochondria. Cholestasis is reflected in alteration of the bile secretory mechanism consisting of biliary canaliculi, Golgi apparatus, and lysosomes.
