Pulmonary structure and function were 2 topics considered at a 3-day Ciba conference held in England in July, 1961—topics important for those who want more than a superficial understanding of the behavior of the human lung. For years, pulmonary anatomists and pulmonary physiologists have gone their separate ways. More recently, and fortunately, workers in these areas have felt the need to draw together, to interpret physiologic events in terms of the structures within which they take place. A similar trend exists in other medical fields, notably in study of the liver and of the kidney.
