Purporting to evaluate the merits of chemotherapy in a general fashion, this, the first report of a committee of the World Health Organization is, in reality, based on the assumption that chemotherapy is an excellent thing. The chief virtue of this report is that it provides an excellent historical review of the general subject of cancer chemotherapy, discussing the different types of chemotherapeutic agents, including alkylating agents, antimetabolites, antibiotics, and hormones.
The text includes a discussion of the problem of the selectivity of these agents in such a fashion that normal tissue will be spared while tumor tissue is attacked,
