Gonococcal meningitis is a rare disease, only 26 proved cases having been reported in the world literature (1). Most of these occurred before the advent of antibiotics. This report deals with the first known case of meningitis appearing in an acute treated gonococcal urethritis that was otherwise uncomplicated. Two points are of interest: First, an accurately diagnosed gonococcal urethritis failed to respond to penicillin in doses usually considered to be "adequate," despite the demonstration of the organism's sensitivity to penicillin in vitro.
