Genetic counseling is a special activity of medical prognosis and consists of giving advice to parents and relatives regarding the recurrence risk of a given inherited disease. For various historical reasons, genetics in the United States developed almost completely apart from the mainstream of medical investigation and practice until quite recently. Most physicians therefore are unacquainted with genetic principles.
