In 1953, publications from Switzerland began to describe renal lesions associated with heavy usage of proprietary analgesics. Scandinavian physicians have pursued the subject more recently and have commented upon a "huge increase in the consumption of phenacetin" (1-4). Overuse of remedies similar to our "APC" tablets seems to be responsible. Groups of patients suffering with chronic painful arthritis and chronic headache syndromes have been found heavily involved. Suggestion of true addiction arises from an interesting group of factory workers studied, who were taking such compounds to enable them to "keep up the pace" required in their establishment.
