The hypotension that is produced in various mammalian species by the administration of gram-negative bacterial endotoxin represents a model for the shock seen in some patients with overwhelming infection. Though endotoxin has many seemingly unrelated effects, profound hypotension may suffice to limit the chances for survival.
This hypotension is probably mediated through neural as well as humoral agencies. There are profound effects on vascular smooth muscle, with constriction being particularly apparent in the early phase.
