Today, we expect the advocate of a new or an old treatment to cite controlled studies to support his thesis. The few well-designed and well-conducted studies on the treatment of peptic ulcer are mostly negative, leaving one a bit uncomfortable in the feeling that his diets and medicines may not have a firm scientific basis. Until a spectacular advance in treament does come along (or more good clinical trials are carried out), we shall have to rely in part on our own experience and in part on the advice of our most skilled and experienced clinicians.
