The finding of crystals in synovial fluid has been the subject of much current interest following the recent description by McCarty and Hollander (1) and others (2) of uric acid crystals in synovial fluid of patients with gout. The diagnostic significance of urate crystals in the synovial fluid of gouty patients has been stressed (1-3) and their probable relationship to the acute inflammatory reaction of gouty arthritis demonstrated (4, 5). McCarty, Kohn, and Faires (6) have also described crystals of calcium pyrophosphate in synovial fluid of patients with chondrocalcinosis or pseudogout.
