Sufficient time has elapsed to evaluate critically the clinical and hemodynamic results in patients who have undergone one or more valve replacements using the ball-valve developed by Dr. Albert Starr and Mr. Lowell Edwards in our Institution.
Three groups of patients will be presented. Forty-eight patients have had isolated mitral valve replacement. Isolated aortic valve replacement has been performed in 49 patients. Fourteen patients have had multiple valvular surgery with one or more valves replaced by the ball-valve prosthesis.
The pre- and postoperative hemodynamic data reveal improvement in valve gradient and response to exercise. Chest X rays usually show great
