Under the direction of Dr. Birren, 22 investigators of the National Institute of Mental Health studied 47 men whose median age was 71 years to see what aging means when it is separated from disease. Their book merits the careful, reflective reading of every physician who deals with older people.
The sample was produced by physicians from volunteers living independently in the community. Health was agreed to be the absence of diagnosable and symptomatic disease after a careful medical history and examination. Those who met these requirements were still more carefully screened in the Clinical Center of the National Institute
