Upon completing this book, I was moved to murmur the motto of one of America's famous institutions of learning, "vox clamantis in deserto"; freely translated as "a voice crying in the wilderness." This phrase describes the book aptly. Mr. Carter's goal is lofty, his effort is noble, and the result is a well-written, concise, pointed attack upon faddism of all sorts; myths concerning sickness and health, old wives' tales, and the appalling general lack of sophistication about mind and body characteristic of the lay public, which fills the coffers of the Madison Avenue food, vitamin, and jet juice hucksters.
