Dr. Andrew G. Morrow: In spite of the efforts of our colleagues in the field of preventive medicine, rheumatic mitral valve disease continues to be one of the commonest and most important clinical problems encountered by cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. Although the disease and its manifestations are familiar to us, quite significant advances have been made within recent years in the methods available for assessing mitral valve disease as well as in techniques of surgical treatment.
