The second volume of the monumental circulation section of the Handbook of Physiology contains 25 chapters on various topics by 39 leading authorities. The volume is in quarto, well printed on glazed paper, beautifully illustrated, and it weighs 9 pounds. It makes one wonder about the appropriateness of the use of the word Handbook. It was nineteenth and early twentieth century German practice to turn out weighty, multi-volumed Handbücher which, though often of inestimable value as reference works, were no handier or more portable than Encyclopaedia Britannica or "Webster's Third."
