In the past few decades, countless microorganisms have been studied for their ability to produce useful antibiotics. It is a curious fact that the majority of clinically effective antibiotics, including amphotericin B (1), have been produced by actinomycetes (2). Among the few exceptions are the penicillins, griseofulvin, fumagillin and variotin, produced by fungi, and a group of antibiotics produced by bacteria: bacitracin, tyrothricin, polymyxin B, and colistin.
