As one whose principal concern has long been with the understanding and control of infectious disease, and who has now reached the period for which the chapter heading appropriately might be "Retrospect and Prospect," I must confess to a great deal of personal conflict. The Retrospect over the history of infectious disease for the past ninety years, indeed contains much to justify a feeling of gratifying achievement. The Prospect is a little grim.
