This book is a multi-authored compendium aiming to document laboratory tests used in the study of various red cell and pigmentary disorders. However, there are also sections dealing with diagnostic approaches, biochemical explanations, and short résumés of various diseases. The treatment of the different topics is uneven. There is overlap and repetition in some sections written by different authors, such as measurement of HbA2. Some descriptions are so short (such as that of hemoglobin peptide analysis) to be completely worthless for laboratory use. Time-honored simple methods are interspersed with highly sophisticated techniques without always an indication of the relative usefulness
