I am deeply honored to have been asked to address you this morning—particulary because I am a so-called biochemist and not a physician, but I hope that you will not underestimate my deep concern and interest in the practical clinical problems of medicine, even though I do not have the M.D. degree. I am fundamentally a physical chemist and physiologist who has spent his life in the medical profession ("on the job training," it might be called).
