The third edition of this well-known book will continue to be a help to medical students. It emphasizes methods of physical examination that are of most use to surgeons and that are not as well presented in standard texts on diagnosis. There are new chapters on examination of the surgical cardiac patient, burns, and emergency resuscitation. Of particular interest are the sections on emergency cardiac surgery in infancy, and on the practical problems involved in selecting patients for cardiac surgery.
