This excellent and comprehensive treatise on the circulatory effects of mitral stenosis is concerned primarily with hemodynamic studies on a group of 250 patients and provides a critical review of pertinent literature including 450 references. Some of the patients were studied sequentially over a period of 10 years. Of particular interest are detailed studies concerning the effects of stress (exercise, tilting, plasma expanders), and of various pharmacologic agents (digitalis, acetylcholine, sympatholyic drugs), on systemic and pulmonary dynamics, as well as their effects on renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, and sodium excretion.
