Siggaard-Andersen presents to the interested specialist a compact review, with special emphasis on the author's contributions to the microdetermination and interpretation of the state of acid-base equilibrium in capillary blood. The analytical method is based on determination of the actual pH of the blood sample, together with pH after equilibration with a gas mixture of known PCO2. From these pH values in combination with oxygen saturation and hemoglobin concentration, it is possible to calculate quantitative indexes of the respiratory and metabolic factors in the acid-base balance by means of a curve nomogram or an alignment nomogram, the construction and use
