The finding of large dark intracytoplasmic inclusion granules in unstained synovial fluids from rheumatoid arthritis joints has suggested the possibility that complexes of some form of gamma globulin and rheumatoid factor may be phagocytized in this disease (1). It has been previously demonstrated that such complexes are phagocytized by normal leukocytes in vitro (2).
The purpose of the present study is to examine a wide variety of joint fluids by specific immunologic techniques in an attempt to determine whether gamma globulin-rheumatoid factor complexes are present within the cytoplasm of joint fluid leukocytes and, if so, under what conditions these occur.
