It has been demonstrated that hemodialysis can sustain life for as long as several years despite complete anuria (1-4) and for a few months after bilateral nephrectomy prior to renal transplantation (5-6). The enthusiasm for dialysis has even promoted the concept that in this setting it is adequate therapy rather than an experimental procedure. We consider dialysis for chronic renal failure a procedure that is still in the investigational stage and from which much biochemical information may yet be obtained.
