Previous attempts to measure erythropoietin levels in serum of polycythemic patients have been inconclusive. Improved bio-assay methods and response to phlebotomy are the subject of this study. Mice were made polycythemic by intermittant exposure to low oxygen tension in a hypobaric chamber. Erythropoietin activity of sera was measured in each mouse by Fe59 and reticulocytosis.
Patients (12) selected for study were clinical problems in diagnosis of either I° or II° polycythemia. Most had prior multiple phlebotomies and treatment with P32.
