Various fluorescent compounds tend to accumulate in malignant tissue. Many attempts have been made to use the fluorescence of these compounds for cancer detection. Our interest in this area has been confined to the use of an acetic acid-sulfuric acid derivative of hematoporphyrin for the detection and management of malignancy.
Hematoporphyrin derivative is given intravenously 1½ to 3 hours before the area in question is illuminated with the wave-lengths (about 4,070 λ) required to activate the fluorescence. Malignant tissue is indicated by salmon-pink fluorescence whereas non-neoplastic tissue appears grayish-white to black when viewed through a special filter.
