The mechanism of production of primary hyperglyceridemia has not been satisfactorily defined. Primary hyperglyceridemia is currently differentiated into the "fat-induced," the "carbohydrate-induced," and the "mixed" forms, according to the manner in which the patient's plasma triglyceride level changes with varying proportions of fats and carbohydrates in the diet (1-4). A number of investigators (5-8) have shown that hyperglyceridemia can be induced in normal subjects and greatly exaggerated in hyperglyceridemic patients by high carbohydrate diets.
