I am pleased to be able to present the 1965 John Phillips Memorial Lecture for several reasons. First, I am happy to be participating in the memorialization of an eminent American physician who was a Regent of the College at the time of his tragic death in 1929. Second, I am fully cognizant of the honor that accompanies the designation of the Phillips Memorial Lecturer, and I am proud to be listed with the 28 former recipients. And, third, I am pleased to be called upon to do my job at this special Golden Anniversary Session of the College.
