Knowledge of both clinical and pathologic aspects of renal disease has advanced greatly in the past 12 years as a result of the introduction of a safe method of doing percutaneous renal biopsies. Close, cooperative studies between clinician and pathologist have led to a new understanding of the natural history of some renal diseases. They are giving us an insight into prognosis in others, and are making us think about new therapeutic approaches to renal disease. The appearance of a monograph entitled Renal Biopsy is therefore timely.
