The title of this book does not prepare the reader for the breadth of material that the authors present. It is not, in fact, limited to elucidating the psychosomatic approach to rheumatoid arthritis; rather it includes a general theory of psychosomatic medicine, as well as a description of the psychosomatic approach to bronchial asthma and peptic ulcer. Although this broad scope prevents the authors from adopting a short-sighted view of rheumatoid arthritis, it leads them into theoretical complexities which are not adequately supported by empirical research.
