I remember vividly an occasion about 5 years ago. In the animal laboratory I was suddenly bereft of speech and movement as my hand came in contact with a poorly insulated operating light. I was less afraid of ventricular fibrillation than that its onset would lead my surgical colleague to use the not so sterile instruments on the animal table and initiate open chest massage of my heart. Since that time closed chest cardiac massage has been shown to be effective, and we may be thankful that its complications are comparatively mild.
