In his opening speech at the meeting of the European Pancreas Symposium, Dr. Henning set the course of the meeting when he briefly discussed the lack of knowledge of this gland due to its hidden position; the little aid of some diagnostic procedures, such as the endoscopy, biopsy, X rays, and cytologic studies in diseases of the pancreas; the importance of the functional examination of this organ, namely the determination of the enzymes in the blood, urine, and in the intestinal contents, especially the response of the pancreatic secretion to the injection of secretin, pancreo-ezymen mecholyl, and other cholinergic substances.
