The myotonia and eventual atrophy of skeletal muscle have diverted attention from alterations of other muscular structures in myotonic dystrophy. In recent years greater recognition of this disease as a generalized muscular disorder has come about because of reports of significant cardiopulmonary changes (1). These changes have been found prior to clinically evident skeletal myotonia in some instances (2). That smooth muscle may be affected has not been widely appreciated, and associated functional alteration of viscera has been overlooked as a source of symptoms in this disorder.
