The contribution of phonocardiogram (PCG) in estimating the severity and "purity" of mitral stenosis was evaluated in 90 patients with pure or predominant mitral stenosis referred for surgery.
Amplitude of the first sound at the apex, expressed as a percentage of the second sound amplitude, showed no correlation with severity of stenosis, but in patients with associated insufficiency the mean amplitude was significantly lower (119%) than in patients without insufficiency (160%). Amplitude of pulmonary valve closure sound, expressed as a percentage of amplitude of aortic valve closure sound did not correlate with severity of mitral stenosis or pulmonary artery pressure.
