Peritoneoscopy is the visualization of the abdominal cavity by means of optical instrument. In other countries, this procedure may be called laparoscopy, abdominoscopy, or celioscopy.
Originally European, it was developed independently by Jacobaeus in Sweden and Kelling in Germany. For lack of adequate instruments and simple technique, only one or two cases were reported in this country in 1920's. In 1932 Dr. John Ruddock of Los Angeles and I started to work on this problem; and by 1934 had developed adequate instruments and simple, safe technique.
