Considerable experimental work has been done in pre-exposure immunization of humans against rabies in recent years (1-8). However, because human rabies is rare in this country and exposure to it relatively uncommon, knowledge and experience of pre-exposure vaccination have been restricted predominantly to large centers of rabies control and to practitioners of veterinary medicine. Inherent in the procedure is proof of antibody response by the standard serum neutralization test, since some individuals cannot be protected successfully regardless of the immunization schedule and others require more than the usual number of booster doses to provoke detectable serum neutralizing antibodies.
