A scheme of classification designed for the filing and retrieval of case material in the four categories of topography (anatomic sites), morphology (tissue reactions, and specific lesions and diseases), etiology (organisms, chemicals), and function (including metabolic and endocrine states).
A simplified, "hang-up" Visual Aid (condensed version) will speed use of the SNOP for indexing most frequent cases.
Could be adapted, in simpler form, to indexing clinical records data for retrieval of specific cases by topic. Would require addition of some categories, such as for diagnostic modalities and disciplines, for use in reprint or reference indexing.
Conceptually, SNOP is less formalistic
