The union between classical physiology and control systems engineering is like an affair between an octogenarian and a nymphet. The latter is self-centered and prone to linear promiscuity; the former, plagued by a fear of impotency, feels a need for idiosyncratic ritual, finicky attention to detail, and ultimately substitutes drugs for passion. And in the rare instance when there is any issue from this union, it is often repudiated by both parties.
Nevertheless, control and regulations are central issues in physiology, and the language and techniques of the control systems engineer are undoubtedly the most powerful and appropriate available tools
