The prevention of acute renal failure has been difficult to demonstrate because of its infrequent and sporadic occurrences. Utilizing a thoroughly-characterized model of spontaneously-reversible, azotemic acute renal failure in the rat, and concurrent controls, various materials were administered intravenously at varying times and dosage. The osmotic diuretic, mannitol, was found to prevent the lesion if administered between 1 hour before and 30 minutes after attempted induction of acute renal failure in the model, and in amounts greater than 300 mg/kg body weight.
