Appalling and confusing change touches every aspect of modern life. Many are writing about change in medicine, but all too often they write in platitudes or with parochialism. This is not another such book. The title is deceiving. The key words are "a study of the essence of medical practice," but even this does not do the book justice. Rather it is an objective attempt to unify in one broad view the confusion and complexity that face medicine. Not only does it succeed in this enormous task, but it succeeds with light and readable style and remarkable economy of words.
