It was observed by Claude Bernard that resection of the splanchnic nerves results in an increased urine flow (1). Although a number of laboratory and clinical investigations have been carried out to study the effect of denervation of the kidney on renal function (2-7), the mechanism responsible for diuresis remains unsettled. Some investigators have suggested that renal denervation depresses tubular transport of sodium (2-4); others, from the evidence that there is a rise in glomerular filtration rate and renal flow after denervation, have concluded that natriuresis is the result of changes in renal hemodynamics (5-7).
