This study was begun when lateral skull roentgenograms of a recent patient with postpartum pituitary necrosis (Sheehan's syndrome) (1) revealed a very small sella turcica.
No previous reports of sella turcica measurements or mention of small sellar size in patients with Sheehan's syndrome were found in the literature. Recently, Fisher and Di Chiro (2) reviewed results of sellar measurements in patients with hypopituitarism. They commented that "a small sella turcica does not exist in adults except in dwarfs" and also stated that "reduction in sellar size has not been shown to occur except in recovery from pathologic erosions."
