New knowledge in medicine is piling up so fast that only the newest of textbooks serve adequately as references. More and more often the physician who seeks a survey of current views must go to review papers such as those in the Medical Progress series in The New England Journal of Medicine or the NIH and UCLA Conferences in the ANNALS or to yearly surveys such as the Year Book volumes or the Annual Review of Medicine.
