The shock research unit was established as a specialized clinical research facility of the School of Medicine of the University of Southern California at the Los Angeles County General Hospital in 1961. This unit was initially planned to improve understanding of mechanisms and on that basis to evaluate and improve current treatment of various forms of clinical shock.
