A voluminous amount of work by professor Heilmeyer and his collaborators is summarized in detail in this superb monograph, which attempts to define the defects in heme synthesis, as reflected in variations in porphyrin metabolism, in the various anemias and the erythropoietic porphyrias. Their general approach has been to assay, quantitatively, the porphyrins and porphyrin-precursors (delta-aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen) in bone marrow aspirates, peripheral blood erythrocytes, and urine, as well as porphyrins in the feces from healthy control subjects and from patients having the various diseases. In selected cases, in vitro experiments were performed in which the amounts of delta-aminolevulinic
