Abnormal immunological reactions have been described more frequently and in greater number in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) than in any other disease. A wide variety of circulating antibodies that are capable of reacting with the patient's own tissues has been identified. Among these antibodies is a group that reacts with various nuclear components. Through the wide use of the immunofluorescent technique, the antinuclear factors (ANF) have been studied extensively by many investigators. However, to date very little has been done to correlate the presence of humoral antinuclear immunoglobulins and skin reactivity to nuclear antigens in SLE.
